I’ve noticed that Minion bath products are a thing, and that many of them are banana-scented.

The fragrance used to impart a banana scent is called isoamyl acetate. Isoamyl acetate is also an alarm pheromone in bees. It’s released when a bee stings something/someone, prompting other bees to sting the same target.

The Minion shampoo has mysteriously infiltrated my house, and my youngest sibling (the only one who uses it) has not been stung since its appearance, but I wouldn’t count on anecdotal evidence…

If you have an allergy to bee stings, I strongly recommend choosing a different scent.

I’m a chemist and I found out I’m allergic to bees after working with isoamyl acetate and being stung twice on my way home from work. Do not use isoamyl acetate as a fragrance and especially not on children, which Minions are marketed to.

Please please please not on children. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Minions products are going to kill someone. only then will this chaos end.

Since this post is picking up steam again just in time for the summer for some reason, I should mention that I actually emailed the company about it and got a response. The tl;dr is that it IS isoamyl acetate, the amounts in it are legal (for whatever that’s worth), and it should wash out just fine.

Im not trying to start drama but i wouldnt trust what the company is saying….
They could be telling the truth but you never know.

Yeah, I think they could be telling the truth about legal levels and all that, at least. But just saying it washes out seems nebulous / dismissive (especially since scented things leave a smell on your skin).

I specifically stated I was concerned about interactions with bees, and they did not address that. They just said it’s legal for them to make it like this.

I’ve had people ask me how I can support my daughter transitioning “at her age,” and how I can support her making such life-changing decisions at her age.

And my answer is and always will be the same:

Because in our first transition therapy session, when she was asked what her goals were for herself and her life, my daughter said: “I want to be one of the 40 percent of trans women who don’t attempt suicide.”

That was the first thing she said. Her first goal. That was her priority. To be one of the ones who DON’T try to kill themselves.

And if that doesn’t tell you every damn thing you need to know about why - I mean other than loving her unconditionally and respecting her right to determine who she is - I support her transition fully and without reservation, then I can’t help you.

The world is against her. I refuse to be.

note: yes, I do have her express permission to post this. TERFs/TWERFs/anti-trans rhetoric will be blocked without response.

I appreciate being called an awesome parent but let me be clear: I think this is the BARE MINIMUM of ACCEPTABLE parenting. I don’t think I’m an awesome parent for this stance. I think that this stance on its own makes me a baseline okay parent.

Under no circumstances should your acceptance of your child and protecting them from WANTING TO KILL THEMSELVES be anything other than the bare minimum standard of parenting. I don’t deserve a medal for this stance. It’s like giving a Best Person award to someone who is breathing. You meet the standards for alive. That’s not worthy of praise.

Understand that I wrote this post because every time I remember her saying that, it takes the breath from my lungs. Understand that she was so depressed before she came out to us that I was afraid that I would find her dead one day because I couldn’t figure out why she was so sad all the time, and she swore she wasn’t being bullied. I didn’t know how to fix it. I was scared for her safety. Remembering it now makes me cry. Asking her about it made me sob. It’s TERRIFYING.

But I’m not a superhero. I feel that I meet the bare minimum of acceptable parenting for taking this stance. And we should promote that idea, that this stance is the only acceptable one. That anything less is just shitty, unacceptable parenting, and might even be child abuse.

“How can you support kids transitioning?”

Because I trust them to know themselves, and I want them to have a better life than I did. It’s really that simple.

  • You shouldn't raise the price of your commissions at all. You make fantastic artwork for 20 dollars. It is a perfect price.

Wow I’m sorry but that made me feel really degraded. I wasn’t going to raise it to $100 or something. It’s a perfect price to a buyer, but my art isn’t worth 20 dollars but that’s not my point.

Yes I know it’s a good deal, but I’m not a robot. Even if I’m someone that “sucked” at drawing, the matter is all about the time spent on my drawings. On average it takes me 6 hours to create 20 dollars worth of a drawing. That’s like 3.3ish dollars an hour. Working all day. Possibly no sleeping until the next day. No breaks except to use the bathroom or to eat 1 cup of ramen or not eat at all. Because of the time limits I’m receiving.

Please keep in mind the only reason people ever charge 20 dollars for a commission is due of the crippling trend of amateur artists selling themselves short at those prices- a trend that artists like Rinji has to compete with. Any self respecting artist knows that is hardly an acceptable price for their works. Rinji knows that. And that is why I applaud them for raising their prices because it is our responsibility as artists to educate people like you that a 20 dollar commission is not a perfect price at all.

I hope you have learned something from this, anon, and please, never, ever assume nor determine the price of an artist’s time if you are the client and they are their own employer. The price is set by them and it is your choice to either comply or move on.

can we talk about how living wage is $15/hr?

Can we talk about how artists should have THAT as a baseline, and because they are SKILLED WORKERS IN THEIR PROFESSION, should actually be charging even more?

I charge at around $15-$20/hr. My dad’s a freelance graphic designer and has been in the industry for over 20 years; he charges $80/hr.

Rinji works at a little over $3/hr

can we talk about how the expectation for low commission prices is a issue, or…?

because $100 is NOT a ridiculous price. At ALL. That’s ~$16.60/hour for a 6 hour commission, which is cheap as hell.

I mean I get why people price the way they do; competition.

HOWEVER: Each commissioner is commissioning YOU because they like YOUR style. Usually? People are more than willing to pay more. Fuck, dude. I worked at a place that sold knife sets for like $2000/set, and people ate that shit up. People spend money on whatever they want as long as they know it’ll be quality work that they’ll enjoy.

    ^This.

We should really be encouraging our fellow artists to charge themselves as they would as a professional. You’re offering your services because you know your art is worth doing business with. If we’re not going to stand up for our own industry, no one will.
